First Artificial Reef Placed Off Grayton Beach

South Walton’s first artificial reef was dropped off Grayton Beach in July, a ground-breaking event in a project that will bring great benefit to the 30A area.

The reef will provide plenty of recreational opportunities for viewing fish, from snorkeling to paddle board and kayak adventures, while also supporting the environment.

Grayton Beach’s reef is the first in a series of 19 artificial reefs planned for the area for snorkeling, fishing and diving.

30A Radio sat down with two of the major architects of the project, Andy McAlexander and Jim Richard (of Stinky’s Fish Camp), about what it took to get the project launched and what the environmental and economic impacts will be.
