Storytellers takes over the one and only SOWAL House once again for an intimate night of stories, creativity, and connection. Grab a drink, find your seat, and settle in as we explore June’s theme.

June Theme: Unfinished Business

There are stories that settle neatly into the past.  

And then there are the ones that keep tapping at the window.

This month’s theme is Unfinished Business: stories about unresolved endings, abandoned plans, unanswered questions, and the strange way certain moments refuse to loosen their grip on us.

The things we meant to say.  

The lives we almost chose.  

The parts of ourselves still waiting to be met.

Because sometimes closure is overrated. And sometimes the unfinished parts are where the real story begins.

Our open mics are simple: sign up when you grab your ticket or find us night of and we’ll put your name in the bag. Whether it’s planned or spontaneous, your voice is welcome here. Writers, poets, songwriters, and storytellers of every kind are invited to step up to the mic. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, tall tales, truth-telling, and everything in between—if you’ve got something to share, we’d love to hear it.

June’s Featured Storyteller: Alejandro Soberón

Alejandro Soberón is a filmmaker, writer, and director whose work focuses on raw emotion, human nature, and deeply dialogue-driven storytelling. Inspired by directors like Martin Scorsese, Alejandro is drawn to stories that explore excess, obsession, love, vulnerability, and the emotional contradictions that exist within people. His goal is to create films that feel honest, intimate, and emotionally real.

He began making movies at 8 years old using an iPad, originally starting as an editor making YouTube videos before eventually writing and directing his own stories. Since then, filmmaking has become his main creative language.

In 2024, Alejandro directed Kill FM for the Gulf Coast State College 48 Hour Film Competition, where the project earned 3rd place nationally in the BEA 48 Hour Competition — the first time the college had ever placed.

Following that recognition, Alejandro received a grant from the SOWAL Foundation to direct another short film, You Too Bro, which premiered at SOWAL House on April 15. Co-written alongside friend and collaborator Yaqub Battle, the film explored themes of love and relationships and marked Alejandro’s first experience directing a production with a larger crew and expanded equipment setup. The project became a major learning experience in both production and collaboration.

Alejandro continues developing film projects centered around emotionally honest characters, cinematic atmosphere, and personal storytelling. He is currently working on his most personal project to date: a love story centered around a young man with schizophrenia. While he can’t share too much yet, he is incredibly excited for what this film is becoming.
