Community gardens are empowering tools. Their benefits are often times too numerous to mention, but we’ll give it a try. They increase access to fresh produce, improve nutrition and food security, and they bring people together to create connections with neighbors. Gardening promotes good physical and mental health, too!
In 2018, The Sonder Project helped to establish a Community Garden in South Walton, Florida, in partnership with Food for Thought.
Sonder donated 12 raised beds, dirt, compost, mulch, pine straw, vegetable & herb plants, and installed irrigation system, garden tools, and in the very near future we will be building a fence around the garden.
Through combined efforts, the two organizations will have weekly volunteers to help maintain the garden, which will provide produce for the local communities in Walton and Okaloosa counties served by Food for Thought.
All produce from the garden will be donated to support low-income youth through Food for Thought’s programming.
After this successful launch, The Sonder Project aims to establish more gardens in low-income communities in partnership with a school or to benefit a local organization combating hunger. There are plans to begin a new community garden in a neighboring Panama City community hit hard by Hurricane Michael.
The Sonder Project’s role in each project will vary depending on the project and may include funding materials, designing a garden layout, organizing community members, mobilizing and managing volunteer efforts.
$7 will provide a bag of soil. $8,000 will provide an entire garden (costs can vary by size & location of garden).
