Jimmy Buffett, the perennial pied-piper of the laid-back beach lifestyle, has left behind a world that feels a little less sunny without his tropical tunes and easygoing presence. On September 1, 2023, per an official statement, Buffett passed away peacefully at the age of 76, “…surrounded by his family, friends, music, and dogs.”
A towering figure in both music and business, Buffett was much more than just the ‘Margaritaville’ man.
A Mississippi native born on Christmas Day in 1946, Jimmy developed a passion for sailing from his grandfather while growing up in Mobile, Alabama. This ingrained love for the sea would become a recurring theme in his now-legendary music.
His musical journey began at Auburn University where he started playing the guitar. But it was a trip to Key West in 1971 with fellow singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker that pivoted his music away from outlaw country to Calypso folk-pop, setting the stage for his breakthrough in 1977 with ‘Margaritaville’.
Jimmy was not only a music icon but also a savvy and highly successful businessman. Since opening his first Margaritaville store in Key West in 1985, he built a vast empire of apparel, resorts, restaurants, beer, casinos, radio stations, and even retirement communities. Forbes estimated the Margaritaville global lifestyle brand had more than $4.8 billion in the development pipeline and garnered $1.5 billion in annual sales as of 2017.
But Buffett’s business acumen did not diminish his creative spirit. Besides his 30 albums, he launched Margaritaville Records in the early ’90s, wrote several best-selling books, and contributed to numerous films and television shows. His musical, “Escape to Margaritaville,” debuted on Broadway in 2018 and, although it closed after five months, continued as a touring production.
Despite undisclosed health issues that led to the cancellation of concerts in 2022 and 2023, Buffett remained an indefatigable road warrior. His summer tours attracted legions of “Parrotheads,” devotees adorned in Hawaiian shirts and hats bearing tropical motifs, emblematic of Buffett’s music.
Besides ‘Margaritaville,’ his rich discography includes pop culture classics such as “Come Monday,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” and “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” among countless other classics his fans know by heart. Each song bears his signature ‘trop rock’ sound, which he also referred to as ‘Gulf and Western,’ characterized by acoustic guitar, steel drums, and pedal steel guitar.
Buffett’s life, much like his music, was a perpetual celebration of living in the moment.
His final album, Life on the Flipside, included a song titled “Live Like It’s Your Last Day,” inspired by his near-death experiences in 1994 and 2011, including surviving a plane crash. Buffett had indeed been living like it could be his last day for a very long time.
