Inlet Beach Underpass Nearing finish Line: A Solution to Traffic Woes and Safety Concerns

The Inlet Beach underpass, a highly anticipated project aimed at alleviating traffic issues, is edging closer to completion. Commencing in 2021, this project has remained a top priority for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), as well as local and state officials. Despite facing several delays, it is now on track to be fully operational by the close of 2023.

FDOT Spokesperson Ian Satter emphasized the project’s uniqueness, noting that the northwest region boasts only one other underpass, located in Tallahassee.

The primary objective of the Inlet Beach underpass is to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists by providing a secure pathway beneath U.S. Highway 98.

Once finalized, it will enable pedestrians and cyclists to traverse the area seamlessly, eliminating concerns about traffic disruptions.

Visitors and residents alike have expressed the urgent need for the underpass’s completion, particularly for those frequently traveling between County Road 30A and Inlet Beach via Highway 98. The intersection has long been known for its heavy traffic, requiring caution from those navigating it. For cyclists, crossing Highway 98 has been particularly challenging, making the underpass an eagerly awaited solution.

Drivers in the area echo these sentiments, as the growing influx of people to the region has led to increased traffic and crossing difficulties on the bustling highway. While pedestrians hold the right of way, some drivers remain uneasy about navigating intersections, making the underpass’s completion a welcome development.

Despite the inconveniences associated with construction, the Inlet Beach underpass project is seen as a vital infrastructure improvement for the region. With a total cost of $5.6 million, the project received funding from a portion of the state budget in 2021.

As the project advances, Scenic Walton is collaborating closely with the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County to design and incorporate various public art elements into the underpass, encompassing vibrant murals along the tunnel walls and captivating sculptures.

Furthermore, comprehensive landscaping plans are in development in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation. Scenic Walton spearheaded this initiative, garnering support from county officials, state representatives, as well as local business and community leaders. Together, they are championing the realization of this substantial project, set to bolster pedestrian and cyclist safety in the rapidly expanding South Walton County area.

As the final touches are applied to the underpass, excitement is building for the enhanced safety and convenience it will offer to both residents and visitors.
