With several first place finishes in 2013, YOLO Board Elite Rider Matt Wise certainly made his presence known as an up-and-coming talent on the SUP race scene in his final season of competition in the 17 and Under Elite Division.
An all-around waterman, the Miramar Beach resident is also sponsored by Kialoa and Maui Rippers and–in addition to SUP racing–competes in regional and national life-saving competitions.
“The combination of Matt’s focus, natural athletic ability and commitment to the sport at such a young age is both admirable and inspiring,” said Jeff Archer, co-owner of YOLO Board. “He’s laying the groundwork for continued success in the SUP scene and beyond, and we’re proud to have him represent the YOLO Board brand. His positive attitude and dedication make him both a great role model and SUP ambassador.”
Wise’s achievements in the 17 and Under Elite division for the 2013 race season include first place at the Hennessey WPA World Championships in Las Vegas, the Orange Bowl Paddle Championship in Miami and the Carolina Cup SUP Race in Wrightsville Beach.
Wise also marked his third consecutive division first place finish in the Florida State Paddleboard Championship in Cocoa Beach and second victory in the East Coast Paddleboard Championship in Daytona Beach. He qualified and competed in both the 2013 Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle elite technical race and elite distance race in Dana Point.
“It’s been a thrilling year, and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to compete among so many talented paddlers from across the country,” said Wise. “The YOLO Board family offers such a great support network. I owe my success to them and my coach and role model—my dad, Gary Wise. I’m looking forward to moving up to the next age division in 2014 and continuing to work hard and compete in as many races as possible.”
