30A yoga teacher Angela Ragsdale is joining hundreds of other yogis around the globe to raise $1 million to help educate and protect people in the Ecuadorian Amazon from the devastating effects being caused by rapid deforestation.
“Living here during the BP Deepwater Horizon Disaster made me realize just how huge the economic impact of any natural disaster can be on locals,” said Ragsdale. “People in Ecuador are having to walk away from their homes and businesses every day as a result of accelerating deforestation, and Off The Mat wants to help change the momentum.”
Ragsdale said that Off The Mat selects a different charity to support each year, but because of the BP Oil Spill, the plight of the Ecuadorian tribes really spoke to her. Ragsdale said that if she raises $20,000, she will travel into the heart of the Amazon rainforest with other volunteers for several weeks to help, as well as to see first-hand how the funds are being used to create positive change.
“We were very blessed here in Walton County that the BP oil spill didn’t have an even greater impact,” said Ragsdale. “But this disaster is happening right now, and many of the people there simply don’t know what to do, or have anyone to help them. I want to share my blessings, and then come back to share the story of their daily struggle to survive.”
