How to Buy and Sell Contemporary Art: An Insider’s Perspective

Learn how to navigate the burgeoning art market at “An Insider’s Perspective on Buying and Selling Contemporary Art,” a Rosemary Beach Foundation presentation, on September 24, 2015.

Caroline Taylor and Tim Malyk, two professionals in the contemporary art world, will teach attendees how to build collections for both pleasure and investment, as well as give insight on how to navigate the social and financial aspects of art markets, including galleries, auction houses, private sales and art fairs.

For the first time in 2014, public auctions surpassed $2 billion in sales, a 40 percent increase over 2013.

Big ticket artworks selling for over $12 million doubled in 2014. Christie’s November 2014 Contemporary Art Auction confirmed Francis Bacon’s Three Studies of Lucian Freud as the most expensive publicly auctioned piece of art ever at $142.2 million – only to be surpassed by a Picasso on the same auction block in May 2015 selling for $179.4 million.

The art world is booming and navigating it can be daunting. Taylor and Malyk can offer some insight.

Taylor is an Independent Curator/Private Art Advisor and former Associate Curator of the Deutsche Bank Art Collection. Malyk is the Director of Auction Development and Senior Contemporary Art Specialist at online auction house Paddle8 and former Senior Specialist at Phillips de Pury and Co Auction House.

The presentation, sponsored by Sea Contemporary Art Space and Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, is part of Rosemary Beach Foundation‘s Live and Learn Series
