On your way to Day 2 and Day 3 of this weekend’s Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam in Panama City Beach? 30A Radio took in Day 1 from open to close, and here’s a quick recap, along with a few great tips.
The concert venue is fantastic. Frank Brown Park is easy to get in and out of from Highway 98, just a minute from the beach. Take a shuttle if you can, but there seemed to be plenty of parking if you arrive between 2pm and 5pm. There’s even a Happy Hour with 2-for-1 beers … at a country music festival. Yeah, we know. Awesomeness.
A few highlights from Day 1:
The legendary Ronnie Milsap was in the house Friday afternoon, and got everyone on their feet with “Stranger in my House” and “Honky Tonk Women.”
Sam Hunt was fantastic, and the bass definitely got cranked up a bit for his show. Hunt has a great stage presence and lead off with “Raised On It” and especially seemed to have fun with “House Party.”
Lady Antebellum is another fantastic group to see live. Every vocal was perfect. We scored some great video of their show, including “Downtown,” and then they went straight into Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” which was a huge sing-a-long for all the ladies.
Tips for Day 2 and 3 of the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam:
• Bring a small fold-up chair. 90% of the people that attended brought chairs.
• Firefly’s crab cakes are excellent.
• You can get bags of beer. I mean, you have to say you did that once, right?
• Bathrooms. There are tons of them, and we never had to wait. But if you really need to go, they offer express restrooms for $1 per visit.
• Download the Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam app. It has some pretty cool features, including full schedules and a social media feed.
• Wear a 30A shirt, but only if you want everyone to high-five you.
• Thank a festival worker or security personnel. They were truly awesome last night. 20,000 fans, and it all appeared effortless.
