On Sunday, Seth Walker will take the stage at Pandora’s, bringing his beautiful blues and soul back to 30A.
As he packed his bags to head east from New Orleans, he took a few moments to chat with us about what he’s been up to and how he feels about returning to the beach.
Q. What most excites you about your music/songwriting today?
What excites me is how mystifying the whole songwriting process is. It’s not something we directly have the power over. I love the challenge of opening a channel of myself long enough for a song to find it’s way through. Once it makes itself known, the roping of the song is an elusive dance. You have to be real quiet to catch the big ones. Right now I feel like I am open to the muse as I prepare to for a new record. I will definitely be playing some new stuff at Pandora’s this Sunday.
Q. What most recently influenced you?
Recently I have been listening to some African blues music and really soaking in some of those rhythms. It all started there. The birthplace of music and humanity. It all boils down to a man beating on a drum.
My new adopted home of New Orleans has definitely creeped into my music as well. The push and pull. The melting pot of goodness.
Q. A North Carolina native, you’ve been making your way across the south — Austin, then Nashville and now New Orleans. How have these cities influenced your music?
Austin taught me the ropes, how to swing, and how to lead a band. Nashville taught me to pay attention, learn from the deep well of musicians and writers that live there, and how hard you have to work put this endeavor in motion. New Orleans taught me to go back to the spirit of why I started playing music in the first place, how to lean into a vocal, and put some weight on the groove.
Q. I know you’ve visited the 30A area before to perform. What do you like about this area and about performing here?
I have performed here many times and love this area. There are so many music heads down here on 30A. I have performed many times at Springfest and Magfest just up the road at The Suwannee Music Park, and have made many great friends from 30A through that festival alone. I also have performed at the 30A Songwriters Festival.
Oh, and the impossibly beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters doesn’t hurt matters either!
You don’t have to twist my arm to hard for me to point my van this way … 30A suits me just fine.
Don’t miss Walker’s show at Pandora’s on Sunday at 8 p.m. Check out his music at sethwalker.com.
