L to R: Sheriff Adkinson, Justin Cassidy and Stephen Ruder
During a recent ceremony at the Walton County’s Sheriff’s Office, local Justin Cassidy was awarded a certificate of accommodation for risking his own life to save a fellow citizen, Stephen Ruder.
On May 27, 2013, Ruder was traveling south on Highway 331 across Clyde B. Wells Bridge when he lost control of his truck and plunged 60 feet into Choctawhatchee Bay, landing upside down.
Cassidy — who happened to be fishing on the south side of the bridge — ran toward the wreckage and dove into the water. He made his way to the driver side door, which was jammed. The cab of the truck was completely immersed in the water, but Cassidy was able to get the door open and pull Ruder to safety.
While Ruder did receive injuries, he said that he is forever grateful to Cassidy for the heroic actions that unquestionably saved his life.
