South Walton Fire DistrictOur South Walton Fire District (SWFD) urgently seeks applicants for the position of Fire/Life Safety Inspector.

Duties will include the ability to plan, organize, coordinate and administer all activities related to fire inspection activities. Respond to general correspondence, telephone inquiries, and requests to inspect. Individual will maintain prescribed records and other materials pertinent to the inspection. Individual will also complete duties and assignments in a timely manner, maintain liaison with key personnel who are involved with fire protection activities and study and research publications to ascertain the latest concerns, techniques and developments in the fire protection industry. Individual shall participate in all aspects of fire prevention/ life safety to include public education. This position reports directly to the SWFD Fire Marshal.

SWFD is a professional fire/rescue agency located in Walton County, Florida. SWFD maintains 5 fire stations, a communications center and also provides beach safety services for the South Walton Beaches. SWFD is responsible for Fire Protection, Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Material Mitigation, Public Fire/Life Safety Education, and Prevention duties for an area of 84 square miles. The population of South Walton ranges from 20,000 to over 100,000 during the tourist season.

Requirements and Qualifications: SWFD is looking for a self-motivated individual that requires limited supervision and can interpret and apply fire codes as they pertain to the fire inspection. Qualified candidates must possess the following:

Minimum of 18 years of age

High School graduate or equivalent diploma required

Florida State Fire Safety Inspector I certification

A combination of education and experience may be considered

Must have a reliable telephone service

Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Must be able to climb stairs, ladders and work outdoors in all types of weather

MAJOR DUTIES:

These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific responsibilities does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Performs other duties as directed.

Inspects new and existing buildings and developments for code compliance; issue citations as required;

May approve or disapprove plans; maintains records and reports;

Performs hazardous materials inspection as necessary;

Assists the Fire Marshal in presentations to civic and community groups;

Prepares inspection reports;

Enforces all District fire codes and ordinances and regulations;

Attends meetings, seminars and training sessions as required;

Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of National, State and Local Codes, Standards and related ordinances;

Knowledge of modern fire inspection principals, practices and methods;

Knowledge of fire protection systems;

Knowledge of hazardous materials, water supply systems, fire loads and fire safety education;

Knowledge of building construction;

Skill in reading building plans and specifications;

Ability to read blueprints and plats;

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, contractors, architects, County employees, community and business leaders and the public;

Ability to apply judgment in making decisions on code compliance;

Prompt, Competent, Caring Response in Time of Need

Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in writing;

Ability to apply and enforce codes and ordinances;

Ability to utilize reporting software, specifically FireHouse

Ability to exercise independent thinking and reasoning within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards and precedents.
