The REP Theatre Bids Farewell After 25 Years of Applause, Art, & Community

Take a Bow, REP!

The REP Theatre Bids Farewell After 25 Years of Applause, Art, & Community

For 25 years, The REP Theatre has been more than a stage. It has been a place where imaginations flourished, where laughter echoed across town squares, and where both visitors and locals gathered to experience the transformative power of live performance. Now, this beloved cultural institution is preparing to take its final bow.

In a heartfelt announcement on July 31, The REP shared that it will cease operations following its final summer performances in mid-August.

The decision follows a period of reflection by the theatre’s leadership and board, who cited a combination of transitions and challenges that made it difficult to sustain future operations. In the face of these changes, and without a clear path forward, the decision was made to close the curtain on what has been a truly remarkable run.

Founded in 2000 by Craige Hoover and Jennifer Steele, The REP quickly grew into Northwest Florida’s premier professional theatre company. Its reach extended far beyond the walls of its 75-seat black box space in Seaside, which served as its home base for 25 years.

With a mission rooted in accessibility, excellence, and community connection, The REP became a vibrant thread in the fabric of 30A.

Over the years, The REP staged a wide array of performances that reflected the breadth and spirit of the region. From whimsical outdoor children’s productions like Charlotte’s Web, Snow White, and Rumpelstiltskin, to beloved holiday traditions like Every Christmas Story Ever Told, The REP was a constant source of family-friendly magic. The theatre also hosted acclaimed concerts through its Live@TheREP series, featuring musicians such as Jeff Black and BLKBOK, and offered enriching programs like kids’ improv bootcamps, songwriting workshops, and literary masterclasses. Every season was filled with stories that inspired and delighted audiences of all ages.

The 30A community, locals and visitors alike, have long embraced The REP as part of the region’s cultural identity. Along this 24-mile stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast, from Rosemary Beach to Seaside to Gulf Place, performances became a beloved ritual. You could often catch a free REP production in one of South Walton’s outdoor amphitheaters, including WaterColor, Alys Beach, Baytowne Wharf, and of course, Seaside, where The REP’s indoor stage anchored its year-round programming. Families planned vacations around their favorite shows. Residents brought guests to experience the charm of theatre beneath the stars.

In a place known for its sugar-white sands and beachside ease, The REP added another layer of richness: a shared love of storytelling and the arts.

In 2024 alone, The REP produced more than 228 free outdoor events and 72 educational outreach performances throughout Walton County. For many families, these moments weren’t just entertainment; they became lasting memories and annual traditions.

The response to the closure has been deeply emotional. Online and in-person, community members, artists, and long-time fans have shared their memories and appreciation. Some spoke of seeing their first play under the stars, others remembered their child’s first improv camp or family night at the theatre. There are also artists who credit The REP with launching their careers or giving them the freedom to create something meaningful.

Michael Henry, a longtime supporter, captured what many are feeling in a tribute posted to The REP’s page: “Your closing may dim the stage lights, but the echoes of your creativity and care will continue to resonate throughout Seaside and beyond.”

As The REP prepares for its final performances, the team is inviting the community to gather once more: to celebrate, laugh, and honor the legacy they’ve built together.
