Walton County is buzzing with a new initiative aimed at easing the flow of traffic, particularly for those using golf carts and low-speed vehicles (LSVs).

The county has launched a survey seeking public input on a novel concept: dedicated passing lanes for these slower vehicles.

The idea, reminiscent of passing lanes on two-lane highways or scenic mountain overlooks, is to provide a special lane on the right side for golf carts and LSVs. This would allow faster-moving vehicles to pass safely, reducing congestion and frustration on the road. District 4 Commissioner Donna Johns highlighted the common occurrence of drivers getting stuck behind slower vehicles and the need for a solution.

The proposal’s pilot, near Main Park Road and Western Lake, between Grayton Beach and WaterColor, has shown promise. According to Johns, the feedback has been mostly positive. The move is expected to alleviate some congestion and frustration and the county feels optimistic about the project’s potential to improve traffic flow.

The survey, open until December 1st, is part of the county’s efforts to gather community perspectives on the plan. It includes suggestions for five additional passing lanes along the 30A corridor. If the response is favorable and the plan is approved, Walton County aims to have all six passing lanes operational before the 2024 spring break season.

This initiative represents a proactive approach to addressing the unique traffic challenges along 30A. It’s a testament to Walton County’s commitment to enhancing the commuting experience while preserving the relaxed atmosphere that makes the area so appealing. Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to participate in the survey and contribute to shaping the future of travel along this picturesque route.
