The Seaside Institute is hosting its first Plein Air Artists Colony Invitational in Seaside from Oct. 14-19, 2013. The unique arts event — which is sure to interest both homeowners and visitors — celebrates the beauty of our community and its people through ‘plein air’ painting.

A dozen experienced plein air artists from all over the country will try and capture the beauty of these places on location throughout the week. The week will conclude with The Gallery Grand Opening on the Seaside Lyceum on October 19th at 5 p.m.

Plein air painting captures the atmosphere of the moment. The majority of the painting must be done on location and is a true test of one’s skill as an artist. It requires utmost confidence in every brush stroke and placement of color in a small window of time. A sunset may last a few moments — and that’s all the time the artist has to capture the entire scene.

The artists participating in this event are: David Csont, Cynthia Edmonds, Scott Heistand, Susan Lynn, Tom Nielsen, Richard Sneary, Robert Simone, John Zanetta, Tish Beckham, Christophe Cardot, Dede Christopher and John Caggiano.

This Week’s Schedule of Plein Air Events:

Oct 14 & Oct 15: The artists will be painting in Seaside

Oct 15 @ 11:00 am: Artist demonstration at Seaside Neighborhood School for 7th and 8th graders.

Oct 15 @ 6:00 pm: You can mingle with the visiting artists, learn more about the art of plein air and enjoy a fish fry dinner prepared by Stinky’s Fish Camp while raising money for the Seaside Neighborhood School garden. Click here to buy a ticket for the Meet the Artists Fish Fry event.

Oct 16: Flash Paint Day! Artists will be painting in Rosemary Beach.

4:00 pm: A painting demonstration by Tom Nielson will be held at The Hidden Lantern Gallery

5:00 pm: Paintings will be framed and ready for exhibition and sale.

Oct 17 @ 2:00pm:  A demonstration will be held at Fonville Press.
