Dan Velazquez Talks Favorite Dessert, Local Events & Hidden Gems

In this edition of 30A Q&A, Dan Velazquez, SVP of Commercial Real Estate for the St. Joe Company, tells us why 30A is the greatest!

1. Where do you go when you need some quality me-time?

When I need quality me-time, I grab my paddleboard and hit one of the area’s 15 dune lakes. I prefer to go in the morning when there are fewer people out and the trip is always better with my dog Roux along for the ride.

2. What’s your favorite dessert on 30A?

Hands down, my favorite dessert on 30-A is FOOW’s ice cream cookie sandwich. It’s tasty and easy to share since they cut it into pieces. The bonus is that nearly every time I order it, someone from a nearby table will strike up a conversation, ask what it is and then proceed to order it for themselves.

3. What’s your favorite local event?

There are so many fun events on 30A, but my favorite is Mountain Film on tour at WaterColor. It’s typically jacket weather in November when this event is held, which distinguishes it from many other local events. This event also reminds me of Telluride (where it started), and that helps me appreciate the relationship between beach and mountain.

4. What’s your favorite way to spend time outdoors?

I love to spend time outdoors hiking and exploring nearby state parks. Our favorite trails are at Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach State Park, and Camp Helen State Park. I’ve also found that the further you go from the parking areas, the more intriguing these parks get!

5. What’s something you’re looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to the continued expansion of SOWAL bocce league. The league has become popular in just a few years and attracts individuals from several counties. So besides spending time playing bocce with local friends, you get to meet some great people from the surrounding area.

BONUS: What local restaurant/ park/ activity is underrated or underappreciated?

Topsail Hill Preserve is the most underappreciated state park in the area. With 1,600 acres of land, it’s easy to find peace and quiet on the west end of 30A. My wife and I also love the variety that the park offers with 15 miles of trails, several secluded dune lakes, and over 3 miles of pristine beaches.
