30A’s own, Cory Davis answers our fab five questions!
1. Where do you go when you need some quality me-time?
Fishing at sunrise at the beach, but getting set up in the complete dark. There’s something to be said about watching the Gulf of Mexico wake up as the sunlight starts to peek over the horizon. The birds get active, the dolphin sometimes get really close to shore, but the quiet and subtle noises of the morning happening around you is amazing. It’s easier to fish for pompano and redfish then too.
2. What’s your favorite dessert on 30A?
This may really sound simple, but the cookie. The chocolate chip cookie at Chanticleer in Grayton Beach is very VERY good. Many times I’ve bought two with intentions of dropping one off to my wife who teaches at the Seaside Neighborhood School as a surprise…but the second one never makes it out of the Chanticleer parking lot.
3. What’s your favorite local event?
Bourbon Beer and Butts at Alys Beach. It has everything from amazing BBQ, local craft beer, and the bourbon selections are outstanding. They also bring in some incredible live music for this event. Well worth a Friday evening on 30-A. The venue for the event at Alys Beach is spectacular.
4. What’s your favorite way to spend time outdoors?
Family time at the beach. Our kids are water bugs. They love the gulf. We set up mid-afternoon and stay through sunset as many times as we can.
5. Three favorite local spots?
Our family loves Stinky’s Bait Shack. They have great live music, a full bait and tackle shop, super friendly staff, and sits right on a coastal dune lake. The food next door at Stinky’s Fish Camp is fantastic. And locals come in to weigh their fish all the time.
If you want to watch 30A from a great patio, mid-afternoon at Growler Garage next to Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar is the place. 40+ taps of local and regional craft beer, wine, and even food you can order. They put live music on the deck during the season, and it is normally a great local hangout. It’s one of the best people-watching patios on 30A. And it’s basically ON 30A. Plus Pecan Jacks’ Ice Cream is right next door so the kids can grab a treat at the same time.
My sneaky place to hang and grab a great cocktail is Bud and Alley’s Pizza Bar (inside). Great selection of adult beverages, you can eat at the bar, and the bartenders are really good. And it’s steps from the world-famous Seaside Coleman Beach Pavillion (tower).
